A couple weeks ago we successfully delivered our first live Mixed Reality presentation. Check out the video to see how it looked like.
We were invited to give this talk by Gunadarma University in Indonesia. The audience were IT undergrads, lecturers and faculty heads.
The presentation was about Industry 4.0 – what’s the history, where we are now and how it will be in the foreseeable future.
To aid in visualizing the concept of industrial revolution, we originally thought of using plain-old powerpoint slides. However, it will be such a shame if we deliver it in the same way many people do in other similar talks.
Late last year we played around with shared experience – multiple devices can see and experience the same MR content at the same time. They can even interact with each other.
Borrowing from what we learned from that experiment, we implemented the concept for our MR presentation. I will be presenting using Magic Leap while the audience will see me and the digital contents via an iPad which will then be mirrored to the big screens. A Windows computer acts as a server for the connection between these devices.
This simple concept worked great. The whole presentation was done without a glitch.
We have some other speaking engagements in the future and will keep improving it. Some ideas we’re planning:
- Added interactivity. Previously we already did it, just that we removed it during Gunadarma presentation to keep it simple. So bringing it back is effortless. Since there is also no limit on the spectators (iPads), many people in the audience can also join in and interact in real time.
- More contents. Since we’re an Immersive Technology consultant, we think it’s just natural to also explain about the difference of AR/VR/MR and how it can be particularly useful for Industry 4.0. From feedback, more charts will also be great.
- Occlusion. So far the content is overlaying on top of the video, so even if I step forward the content will still be drawn on top. Using camera with depth perception can do the job based on our experiment. This will make the presentation truly MR in the proper sense.
- Video feed from pro camera. iPad’s camera is by no means great. The real world feed can be improved if we’re using a DSLR or other video recorder in the prosumer range and above. However it introduced another issue which is tracking. Most likely we have to utilize external tracking to get the job done.
We’re very excited about this live MR Presentation. Hope that from many speaking experience to come we can deliver a more impressive experience. Contact us if you’re interested in inviting us to speak in your event.
